The way bifacial or two-sided solar panels work, is that they gather solar energy from both sides of the panel, making them more effective than traditional one sided panels. They are more efficient if mounted on a somewhat reflective surface.

According to Euronews, Mitsotakis promised to speed up permits for renewable energy projects in order to decarbonize Greece and encourage the use of clean energy around the country.

Greece also want to significantly increase its renewable energy capacity by 2030, up to 19 gigawatts. The country might need to make this happen sooner, however, since the European Commission plans to accelerate the transition to green sources of energy by 2027, in order to end the reliance on Russian gas.

The new solar park in Greece has the capacity of 204 megawatts and it was built by one of the country's biggest oil refiners, Hellenic Petroleum, which is in a transition period to cleaner energy solutions.

The company hinted that it might add battery storage as well in the future.

The new park will be connected to the country's power grid in the next few weeks and it should provide power to some 75.000 homes.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that "this project reflects our national goals for cheap and clean energy from the sun, from the wind, from the water."

Greece was able to beat its 2020 goal by producing 21.7% of its total energy consumption with renewable energies, according to figures from the European Union, and the country aims to increase the total amount of green energy produced to 35% by 2030.
