According to ESG Today, the recently-opened Ford Cologne Electric Vehicle Center, which was first opened as a factory back in 1930, has been equipped with a next-generation production line, battery-assembly unit and automation processes, all packed in 125 hectares. According to official numbers, the annual EV production capacity has been estimated at 250.000 cars.
Bill Ford, Executive Chair, Ford, said that "this facility will now be one of the most efficient and environmentally responsible plants in the entire industry."
In order to transform the production facility in a carbon neutral one, several measures have been taken, such as operating on 100% renewable electricity and biomethane. At the same time, an external power plant and an incinerator are generating the required heat in a carbon neutral way, through a dedicated steam network. The emissions associated with the production of heat are to be offset by the provider itself, with later plans to reduce the carbon footprint by 60% by 2026 and by 100% by 2035.
Martin Sander, General Manager, Ford Model e Europe, said that "the carbon neutral Cologne EV Center is a leading automotive industry showcase for the switch from traditional auto manufacturing to electric vehicle production."
"The facilities and processes have been designed by our engineers to maximize efficiency and minimize environmental impact, helping Ford become carbon neutral in Europe and supporting our global decarbonization plan."
Any thoughts?
