Through the project, all smartphones from the Nokia series newly launched in Romania, namely Nokia XR20, Nokia X20, Nokia X10, Nokia G50, Nokia G20 and Nokia G10, can be registered online in order to plant trees in the users’ names, in the counties Alba, Bacău, Cluj, Sibiu and Timiș in Romania. Thus, for each Nokia XR20 smartphone 5 trees can be planted, with each Nokia X20, 4 trees can be planted, each Nokia X10 and Nokia G50 can plant 3 trees, and each Nokia G20 and Nokia G10 corresponds to 2 trees planted for the users.

„This year we set the ambitious goal of planting a million trees to help rebuild the environment and be able to be up to the new challenges of our day, and Romania is an important cornerstone in achieving this goal. We are determined to help guide the current economic system to a more sustainable model – whether we refer to transforming the production process to ensure that our phones can be used in optimal conditions for at least 3 years, over a year over the European average, donating all profits from the sale of our chargers to NGOs that work to remove waste from international waterways, or, as we see here, setting biodiversity restoration objectives without which neither us nor our future generations will be able to keep up the lifestyles we have gotten used to. HMD Global is a responsible company that keeps growing and transforming, and we strongly believe that it is our duty to actively contribute to imposing new standards in our field. That is why we are glad that a proactive initiative like Planting Good Deeds in Romania saw this and joined us with no hesitation in this beautiful journey”, said Robert Siewierski General Manager Eastern Europe, HMD Global.

„We carry our forests in our minds and in our souls, and we owe them our past, present and future existence. Today we all feel that we are indebted to them and that the road to a truly symbiotic relationship with nature is long and difficult. But necessary. In all these years, our mission has been and still is to plant forests and grow along with them. We are glad that HMD Global has joined the Plant Good Deeds in Romania initiative and that this way we can continue the mission we are pursuing with the help of this movement dear to us. Last but not least, we are honored to be part of the global initiative to plant one million trees and contribute together to the regeneration of our planet's resources”, added Marin Toma, President, EcoAssist Associațion.

In recent years, HMD Global has taken a number of important steps to reduce its impact on the environment – from removing the default phone charger provided with the box to ensuring the longest possible life of usage for the terminal, through constant security updates. All of these measures help the planet by reducing e-waste, and now the company is moving forward in its mission, by actually putting trees in the ground around the world, and in Romania with the help of the NGO Plant Good Deeds in Romania.

According to the European Environment Bureau, if all people in Europe were to use the smartphones they own for an extra year, until 2030 the carbon footprint would be reduced by the equivalent of two million off taken off the roads. Designed to be used in optimal conditions for at least 3 years, more than a year above the European average, Nokia smartphones are protected, safe and always updated for consumers.

Moreover, the charger and headphones are no longer included in the boxes with the new terminals, thus helping reduce the 12,000 tonnes of e-waste generated by EU phone chargers. When needed, the chargers can be purchased from Nokia.com, and the money raised will be donated to CLEAR RIVERS, a charity that fights for the elimination of plastic waste from international waterways. New Nokia models such as the Nokia X20 are also sold with a 100% compostable case, to make sure the phone can be kept and used for longer.
