Earlier this year, we shared the news that Starbucks is one big food and beverages company that aims to reduce littering and plastic pollution with the company's reusable cup, and now, Burger King joined that sustainability effort in the UK.

According to GreenBiz, Burger King wants to trial the use of reusable and returnable packaging in order to stop using single-plastic containers by 2025.

The company announced a partnership with the global re-use platform Loop to introduce a new plan that would allow customers to pay a 1.26 dollars deposit for a reusable cup or packaging, instead of throwing them away when they're done using them.

Ipswich and Newmarket in Suffolk will host the first Burger King restaurants to implement this pilot plan that will take five months and will allow its customers to buy 10 products in the new reusable packaging offered by Loop, including some burgers, sides and even drinks.

The return process of the packaging or cups is easy, as special Loop bins will be installed outside the Burger King restaurants and even in other locations that customers can find on the Loop app.

All customers have to do is scan the barcode from the cup or package via the Loop app on their smartphone and then place the packaging in the bin, with their initial deposit being returned via the app.

And that's it, all the returned cups and packaging will be professionally cleaned to make sure it is good to be used again.

Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle and Loop, said that "the partnership between Loop and Burger King enables customers… to trial re-usable packaging when ordering their favourite burgers, sides and drinks."

Loop already works in a similar direction with companies such as Tesco and Coca-Cola.

"Consumer demand for more sustainable options is at an all-time high and the customer response to this exciting trial will be used to inform future plans for a long-term reusable and returnable packaging scheme", he added.

Nicola Pierce, director of commercial planning and ESG at Burger King, said that "the launch of the new packaging from Burger King will include the first-ever reusable and returnable ‘clamshell' for burgers and sides in the UK. We're excited to see how the trial performs over the next five months and help us reach our goal of eliminating single-use plastic within our restaurants by 2025."

Last month, Burger King announced a similar trial in New Jersey.

This effort is one of the many others the company wants to implement in order to cut its emissions by 41% per restaurant by 2030.
