As per Euronews.green, Bratislava's municipal waste management company trialed the special containers for collecting cigarette filters during the Christmas markets that recently took place. Authorities announced that the collected waste materials will be used to create asphalt, which will then be converted into new roads.

Odvoz a Likvidácia Odpadu (OLO), the capital's waste management operator also said that the special containers will also be implemented at upcoming public events this year in the hope to collect as many filters as possible.

Martina Čechová, manager of the circular economy at OLO, said that "if visitors to a festival, run, market or other urban event throw cigarette butts into a special container, they will contribute not only to a cleaner environment but to the material recovery of this type of waste."

Slovakia is already home of the world's first road made with the help of cigarette filters provided by recycling company EcoButt.

Cigarette filters that end up in the environment are extremely dangerous, as they release toxic substances that can contaminate the ecosystems and it is reported that only a third of the 18 billion daily-smoked cigarettes end up in special bins.
