ESG Today reports that production of fertilizers, like nitrogen, can be a carbon intensive process that uses vast amounts of fossil fuels and contributes with around 2% to the world's total carbon footprint.

2021-founded Atlas Agro is currently building large-scale green nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing plants in the US and Latin America. These will use green hydrogen in the production of sustainable fertilizers for the farming sector, while also looking to produce carbon-free nitrate fertilizers locally in farming-intensive regions.

Atlas Agro experts will only use air, water and renewable power as the inputs for the process and each of the company's factories will reduce CO2 emissions by about 2 million tons annually.

Petter Østbø, CEO of Atlas Agro, said that "Macquarie Asset Management, with their experience in projects and infrastructure, ability to initiate support investments with a wide range of expertise and their ambition to accelerate decarbonization of hard-to-abate-industries, is an ideal partner for us as we approach construction of our first plants in the United States."

William Demas, Americas Head, Macquarie Asset Management Green Investments, added that "Atlas Agro has a highly experienced management team with strong credentials and expertise in developing, building and operating fertilizer plants with a reduced environmental impact. We look forward to working with the company to fulfill our shared vision to help drive the next phase of energy transition."
