Bower is a Stockholm based startup that wants to fight plastic pollution and came up with an incentive for users that engage in recycling activities by offering them money, discounts or coupons.

Recently, the startup received an investment of 4.1 million euros and plans to expand the business worldwide, with the first stop in the UK, according to Tech.eu.

The green tech startup was founded in 2015 by brother and sister entrepreneurs Suwar Mert (CEO) and Berfin Roza Mert (COO) and allows customers to scan any product that can be recycled and has a barcode and receive incentives when they take the packaging to a recycling center.

”Plastic bags, milk cartons, metal cans – everything that has a barcode can be deposited with the Bower app. You simply scan the barcode on the packaging and receive the deposit value – points or money – directly in your mobile phone when you take your packaging to the recycling station”, it is stated on Bowers website.

”Choose yourself how you want to use your collected deposit value. You can use the points you collect to redeem value checks or coupons that give you discounts on future purchases. You can donate your collected money to charity, send to a friend or redeem to your bank account”, it is further stated.

The company has partnered with brands such as consumer giants Nestlé, L’Oréal and Unilever to help them reach their sustainability goals.

The free-to-use app is used by more than 300,000 people in the Nordic region, recycling more than 1.4 million packages every month.
