Climate change threatens a delicacy that is common in Europe

This year's climate related events, but also conflicts taking place in Eastern Europe, already caused a number of shortages in the food supply chain, such as cereals and the Dijon mustard, but recently, truffle hunters also had issues.

According to Yahoo Life, climate change-related events caused a decrease in the availability of the delicacy, meaning that the price of the already expensive ingredient also went up.

Some truffle varieties can now cost as much as 1.000 euros per kilogram, compared to around 800 euros per kilograms last year.

Truffle hunter Melissa Waddingham stated that "this season the truffles have been very poor."

"The majority of them are small, in bad condition—a lot of insect infestation, and, yeah, not very many big truffles", she added.

The south coast of England is the area where Melissa is gathering truffles from, but this year's hot summer meant that the cultures didn't have the proper conditions to grow.

Researchers looking into truffle cultures say that even a temperature change of three degrees Celsius could stop the production of the delicacy entirely.

This is caused by the fact that the seasons in which trees grow got shorter, which means that truffles have less time to grow themselves, so they end up tiny.

While it is a delicacy that stretches from Northern Africa to the UK and is not considered an essential food, experts warn that this could be just the beginning of a food crisis if we don't act faster.

"They represent sort of what we take for granted … We might be considering things as insensitive or invulnerable that are actually sensitive and vulnerable", the lead author of the Burgundy truffle said.
