According to Reuters, the fuel is obtained through the process of concentrating sunlight to produce carbon-neutral kerosene.

Swiss International Air Lines officials said that "this will make SWISS the first airline in the world to use 'sun to liquid' fuel."

Philipp Furler, co-founder and CEO of Synhelion presented the advantages of their fuel compared to fossil fuels. He stated that "our next-generation carbon-neutral solar kerosene is an economically and ecologically viable substitute for fossil fuels."

Synhelion wants to build the first facility in the world for producing solar fuel in Germany, with plans to expand production to Spain later on, with support from SWISS and Lufthansa.

The first planes from SWISS powered by solar kerosene are expected to take off in 2023.
