Euronews.green writes that following this feat, the country now looks to not only supply itself with just renewable power from now on, but also to help other nearby states meet their sustainability demands in the energy sector. Also, the amount generated in 2022 was 26% higher than in the previous year.

Besides generating enough renewable energy to meet its own demand, Scotland was also able to cut its power use by 4% to 22.040 GWh.

Scotland’s Energy Secretary Neil Gray, said that "for the first time Scotland has produced more renewable electricity than it consumed, demonstrating the enormous potential of Scotland’s green economy."

"Our ambition is not only to generate enough green electricity to power Scotland’s homes and businesses, but also export electricity to our neighbors, supporting jobs here in Scotland and the decarbonization ambitions of our partners", he added.

He also mentioned that one of the issues that might slow the process down are the inefficient grid, calling for UK officials to not only offer more funding towards improving it, but also for the deployment of more renewable capacity.

Still, he believes that the country has more potential to harness natural resources for renewable energy, which could also help the local economy through the creation of new jobs.

Gray explained that "in a number of areas progress is being held back by factors such as grid capacity and the lack of a market mechanism for the likes of pumped hydro storage, which is why we need urgent investment from the UK government now and more consistent commitment to industry in the years ahead."
