The Next Web reports that portable charging stations, called Off-Grid Battery Energy Storage Systems (ESS) is designed to store energy and supply it in areas where access to electricity is restricted.

According to Jaguar, the station has 125 kWh capacity, enough to fully charge an I-Pace or to power a house for an entire week and it recharges itself through the integrated solar panels.

It can top up vehicles at speeds of 22 kW and comes with Type 2 connectors, which are used by most electric vehicles.

While the portable EV charger will be available for commercial use, Jaguar didn't disclosed a release date or the price.

The station was tested by Jaguar's TCS Racing Formula E team to power their equipment and supply backup power to the garage.

Other car companies have been repurposing batteries from their EVs, such as Tesla, who operates the Powerwall since 2015.

The Powerwall stores the energy that it collects through solar panels to power homes in case of an outage.

Renault does something similar in their partnership with Powervolt in order to turn used EV batteries into home energy storage systems.

Hopefully, more car manufacturers will start to do the same and give used EV batteries a new life, either as backup power for homes in case of outages, or as backup power solutions for the more common electric cars.
