The Netherlands' 28 bn. euros plan to achieve national climate neutrality

Netherlands officials recently announced that they will spend some 28 billion euros in the next years to ensure that the country will be able to meet its climate commitments by 2030.

According to Reuters, government representatives showcased a number of measures that should allow CO2 emissions to be 55% lower by 2030 compared to 1990, such as increasing taxes for rich-emissions industries and also building offshore solar parks.

In 2022, the Netherlands was able to achieve 30% lower emissions compared to levels in 1990 and country climate minister Rob Jetten said that "the Netherlands has for years missed its climate goals. Now it's time for a great leap forward."

The new measures, if implemented correctly, could allow the country to lower its environmental footprint by 60% before the next decade, surpassing the initial goals.

Country officials also aim for a net-zero energy system by 2035, which will be achieved through converting gas-powered stations to hydrogen power and also connecting wind turbines to off-the-grid energy storage systems.

Carbon neutrality should also be achieved by energy-intensive industries, which should increase the use of green hydrogen and also the implementation of recycled materials.
