The mandatory share of renewables in the EU from 2030

Energy ministers from EU countries reached an agreement to grow the share of renewable power coming from sources like solar and wind projects up to 40% of the total by the end of the decade.

According to Solar Daily, the target was previously set to 32% and is part of the EU's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030.

These targets should help us achieve net zero emissions in Europe by mid-century.

Additionally, energy ministers also agreed to reduce the total energy consumption in the EU bloc by at least 9% by the end of the decade compared to 2020 levels.

The agreement will now be negotiated with the European Parliament to officially confirm the new targets.

The push towards a higher share of renewables is also meant to ensure Europe becomes more energy-independent.

In 2020, the EU managed to record a 22.1% share of its total energy consumption from renewable sources, 2% better than its initial target.
