Oslo could be the first all-electric public transport capital by the end of 2023

Oslo hopes that by the end of 2023, it will be the first capital city in the world with a completely decarbonized public transport system and by 2030, it could be the world's first emission-free city.

According to Reuters, going all electric on the public transport fleet means that Oslo officials will have to replace the diesel electric buses with battery or hydrogen-powered ones.

Around 47 million dollars will be allocated for the necessary 450 electric buses and the funds will be provided thanks to a program from Sirin Stav, the city's vice-mayor responsible for environment and transport.

She stated that "the maintenance is cheaper, it's also cheaper for the operators of the electric buses. All in all, this is a win-win situation."

Oslo also electrified most ferries that transit the fjord on which the city is located.

Officials claim that in the last bid, electric buses were 5% cheaper to purchase compared to diesel ones.

Ingvild Roerholt, an adviser on transport questions at Norwegian environmental group ZERO, said that "it is important that Oslo going forward makes sure there is transparency in how much emissions are associated with the production of these ferries and vehicles."
