How Amazon managed to cut its emissions in half in Europe

Amazon officials stated that they increased the use of railway and sea transportation methods by 50% in 2023 throughout Europe, which helped the company reduce its carbon emissions output, while also helping customers get their hands on orders quicker.

ESG Today writes that Amazon set an end goal for 2040 as far as reaching net-zero emissions across its value chain. Scope 3 emissions, which represent indirect emissions coming from a company, account for three quarters of Amazon's carbon footprint.

Amazon officials said that the company was able to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 0.7% in 2022, despite having an overall business growth of 9% in that same year.

At the same time, using rail and sea ways for transferring packages and inventory helps the company move cargo faster, while cutting emissions by almost 50%. To assign shipments more efficiently between ships, trains and trucks, Amazon uses flexible trailers.

Amazon officials said that "in 2023, like the year before, we will transfer thousands of truckloads between our buildings by sea and rail in Europe, saving thousands of tons of CO₂ emissions."
