Australia pledges to reduce greenhouse emissions by the end of the decade

The Australian government committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43% by 2030, this being one of the core decisions of the newly elected policy makers. Previously, the Australian officials came up with a proposal for greenhouse gas reduction between 26 and 28 percent by the end of the decade.

According to NPR, The legislation needed to reach this target will be adopted by the newly elected Australian Parliament, which will hold its first meeting on July 26th.

The Green Party, one of the minor representatives in the Parliament, would like the target to grow to 75%, while other newly elected independent lawmakers have called for a target of 60% or at least 50%.

Australia is one of the largest exporters of coal and liquified natural gas în the world, which reduces its dependence on fossil fuels, but lso makes this a controversial issue, as the previous government was considered to lag when it comes to combating climate change, for example.

To compare, countries such as the United States have committed to reductions of between 50% and 52% below 2005 levels by 2030. And Britain has pledged to cut emissions by 68% below 1990 levels.
