United Airlines fuels the future of sustainable flying with billions of liters of SAF

Officials at United Airlines recently announced that the airline company signed an agreement with decarbonization-focused industrial biotech company Cemvita in order to receive as much as 3.7 billion liters of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) made from captured CO2 emissions.

ESG Today writes that Cemvita agreed to supply United Airlines with up to 189 million liters of SAF every year over the course of two decades.

Despite being one of the main solutions to decarbonize aviation, SAF supply is fairly low as of right now, since the technologies aren't yet ready for full scale manufacturing.

2017-based Cemvita uses biotech for various industrial processes, such as carbon-negative chemical production and synthetic microbes that can turn CO2 into SAF.

Moji Karimi, CEO of Cemvita, said that "biology is capable of truly amazing things. Our team of passionate, pioneering, and persistent scientists and engineers are on a mission to create sustainable BioSolutions that redefine possibilities."

United Airlines pledged to become a net-zero company by mid-century, without resorting to carbon offsets and to ensure safe and sustainable flights in the future, the company recently began investing in SAF-focused startups.
