The upcoming Volvo-Northvolt battery plant gets the greenlight from the Swedish officials

Swedish officials recently gave Volvo and Northvolt the greenlight for their upcoming EV battery plant, which will be located in Gothenburg. Announced initially in 2022, the Novo Energy plant should be built starting this year.

Electrive writes that the facilty could have an annual production capacity of 50 GWh and is expected to enter service in 2026 and Volvo and Northvolt's second factory could employ around 3.000 people.

The two companies didn't specify how much they will invest in the upcoming battery plant, which will be located near Volvo's Gothenburg car-manufacturing facility, although it won't provide cells just for that production line. Still, in 2022, officials at both companies announced a 2.9 billion euros investment, which will go towards both the battery plant, but also a battery research center.

The Sweden-made batteries are said to be installed both in Volvo and Polestar vehicles, the latter of the two being manufactured only in China for now, with a possible expansion of the production to the US, starting 2024.
