The company that could open Europe's largest blue hydrogen plant

Gas and chemicals-specialized company Air Products recently announced its plans for what could be Europe's largest blue hydrogen plant, which will make use of a next-generation carbon capture and treatment facility at its existing hydrogen production plant, located in Rotterdam.

ESG Today reports that the facility could begin operations in 2026 and will serve ExxonMobil’s Rotterdam refinery and other customers through Air Products' hydrogen pipeline network system. As per Air Products officials, the project is made possible as an agreement made with ExxonMobil and the Dutch State.

Hydrogen is considered by some experts to be the fuel of the future, although currently, we mostly produce it from fossil fuels, meaning that it contributes indirectly to climate change. Blue hydrogen is a variation that's a result of the conversion of natural gas, with the resulted CO2 emissions being captured and stored permanently.

The carbon captured from the production of blue hydrogen in Rotterdam will be transported 20 kilometers off the coast to the North Sea, where it will be stored three kilometers below.
