Tesla’s rivals from China, to end production on internal combustion cars

Chinese electric vehicle constructor BYD, one of the largest electric vehicle makers in the world and one of the firms competing with Tesla in this segment, announced that it has halted production on combustion engine vehicles.

The company’s plan is to concentrate all its efforts on its full electric and plug-in hybrid cars, according to documents submitted to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and cited by Reuters.

BYD is one of the 6 car manufactures in the world, alongside Volvo, Ford, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar Land Rover, that have commited to end all production on internal combustion vehicles by 2040.

In march of this year, BYD sold over 104,000 units of its new energy vehicles (NEV), a huge surge compared to the same month of 2021, when it only sold a bit over 24,000 units.

According to the results given by BYD and posted by Reuters, last month's sales consisted of over 53,600 pure Evs, more than 50,600 plug-in hybrid cars and 540 commercial NEV cars.
