Portugal is the first country that generated more green power than it could use

Over the course of a week, Portugal was able to generate more clean power than the country needed, setting a new world record. Over 1.1 MWh of energy were generated from sustainable sources, such as wind and solar installations.

Euronews.green writes that, on the other hand, the country's requirements over the said 149 hours were just 840 GWh, meaning that it surpassed its own necessary by 262 GWh.

The previous record on this matter was set in 2019, when the clean energy was able to surpass demand by 131 hours. At the same time, two more records were broken, one which meant that renewable energy exceeded the demand of the National Electric System, including pumping water at hydroelectric reservoirs.

At the same time, between November 1st to November 5th, clean energy generation was higher than the consumption over the course of 95 consecutive hours and the excess energy was exported to Spain.

Portugal aims to source 85% of its energy requirements from renewable sources by the next decade, while by 2040, the country wants to deccomission all of its natural gas-fired plants. Also, by 2045, Portugal officials want the western-European state to become fully carbon neutral.
