Northvolt's subsidiary Cuberg makes lithium-metal batteries for aviation use

Swedish battery expert Northvolt recently announced that Cuberg, its US-based subsidiary, began the production of lithium-metal cells for electric planes, as the battery specialist aims to take a slice of the electric aviation industry as well.

Reuters writes that aviation startups that want to electrify airplanes have to look at other solutions than lithium-ion batteries. This is because these cells are too heavy to be implemented in large aircraft, which is why hydrogen and lithium-metal batteries could be the better option for storing the required energy.

Cuberg's CEO Richard Wang said that "with this new program, we will build certifiable battery systems enabling greatly enhanced aircraft performance."

Last year in June, Northvolt officials announced that the company received a 1.1 billion dollars investment from the likes of Volkswagen and others to bring more batteries for the EV industry.

Cuberg said that the lithium-metal battery system was already installed on a test aircraft and it was deemed safe and sustainable for operational flights.

The company's batteries are also said to have long operational lifespans and are good enough for heavy-duty transport scenarios.
