Microsoft plants 30 million trees for one of the largest carbon capture projects

Microsoft and carbon-removal specialized startup Mombak recently announced one of the largest natural carbon sequestration projects in the world. According to the agreement, Mombak is expected to remove 1.5 million tons of CO2 emissions on behalf of the American corporation.

ESG Today reports that this will be done through reforestation projects in the Brazilian rainforests. Brazil-based Mombak focuses on large-scale carbon removal projects, by reforesting degraded or unproductive grazing land.

This has other benefits, besides just capturing carbon emissions, such as helping with flooding prevention and restoring natural biodiversity.

The new agreement will allow Mombak to reforest around 25 areas in the Brazilian Amazon, for which will be used around 30 million trees, including species threatened with extinction. Microsoft officials expect the project to help with removing some 1.5 million tons of CO2 emissions from the atmosphere, while helping with restoring ecosystems and biodiversity.

The American corporation bets highly on carbon-removal projects, having established deals with companies such as CarbonCapture and Climeworks.
