Honda and Sony are working on the two companies' first smart EV

A joint venture from Sony and Honda aims to deliver its first EV by 2026, which will be sold online first in Japan and the US. The software side of the vehicles will be handled by Sony, company officials said.

According to Reuters, the price of the vehicles has not yet been disclosed, but they are expected to come at a premium and Sony's software solution could also bring recurring revenue from entertainment and other services.

Sony Honda Mobility, which is the name of the new company, said that the line of vehicles that it plans to release will act more like a smartphone on wheels, without pointing to any platform specs.

Sony's system and sensors will be able to deliver Level 3 autonomy for the new EVs, which means that drivers can theoretically drive on the highway without having their hands on the wheel or even watch the road, but should always be careful and ready to take control.

Company officials added that Level 2+ assistance will be also available for urban driving.

Level 2+ automation means that the car can handle both the steering and acceleration and braking in case of an emergency.

We covered in March that Honda and Sony planned to bring a new series of EVs on the market, where both companies will bring their respective expertise.
